While I was listening to the song 'Same Ol' Mistakes' there were a few things that were going through my mind and what I could do with the song.
As the song is very dark and eerie I thought of making the song black and white. As I wanted to follow the theme of Rihanna's songs I was looking through the previous songs that she has done and not many of them use a black and white theme although, 'Kiss it better' does which is one of her videos as well as 'Pour it up' which isn't black and white however it does have a dark blue filter over it that makes it a bit more interesting to watch. For my video I'm not sure if I want to have a black and white theme or just do some dark colour as a filter over the video.
As soon as I heard this song I immediately thought of busy places such as cities and decided that is where I am going to film this. I decided to film this in London during the day, I was originally thinking a city at night however it would be more practical to do the filming during the day. When I think of filming in London I was thinking about the underground, Hyde park and just general crowd shots in Oxford street. I am thinking about trying to find a gloomy but neutral day to film this on, I wouldn't want it to be raining or sunny however I think if it was a grey day then it would go along with the song very well therefore I will have to plan this in advance.
My main idea for this music video is to have my actress acting lost in the city and feeling free with getting over the relationship. I am also thinking about having a few shots from her perspective at around 1 minute 10 seconds into the song as the audience will find it interesting to see everything from the actress's perspective.
At the start of the song there is a 40 second music introduction in which I'm thinking of having a montage of the actress looking lost in London and a few close ups of the actress in different locations.
There are also a few lyrics in the song that I would want close ups for, for example the first line she opens with is 'I can just hear them now' which I feel like would be a good close up and tie in with the rest of the video. This starts at around 40-43 seconds.
My initial idea for the costume and makeup was neutral and casual. This is because I have done some research on the costume and makeup that Rihanna has in her music videos and they are usually things I can't replicate e.g. wearing just a blazer and heels in 'Kiss it better' which is one of the songs. With makeup most of her songs have either neutral makeup or very over the top due to it being a party scene, therefore in my one I decided that she would have neutral makeup e.g. eyeliner/ eye shadow and mascara. For her costume I wanted to include a long dark coat which would make the video look better as it would make it more upmarket because the coat will look expensive and fit in with the theme of the music.
Peer Feedback
I asked my peer feedback group about my ideas for the music videos and here is what they said:
- The group liked the idea of the song being in a city like London where it's busy and they like how it fits in with some of Rihanna's theme as some of her music videos are in cities or towns.
- Some people in the group also liked the idea that my music video is concept based and is based around the topic of freedom and moving on from relationships.
- Some people from my peer feedback also said that they liked how I wanted to have close up shots of the actress singing the lyrics.
- One thing that they suggested was that I could use more makeup or costume that could be more like her other music videos.
